Ethical Issues Facing McDonalds - 1772 Words
Problem/Issue Identification Ethical Issues Facing McDonalds McDonalds puts in a lot of effort in supporting children with severe diseases. However, the diet this company offers contributes to heart diseases, asthma, obesity, and likely even mad cow disease. Adults and children are getting the wrong message in the society today. For instance, around 59 of 250 hospitals house fast food restaurants. Expenditure on fast foods from McDonalds has been on the rise as years pass by. The company has been faced with serious challenges for providing food that is dangerous for the health of consumers. In 2003, some American teenagers filed a lawsuit against McDonalds accusing the corporation of their obesity, coronary heart diseases, diabetes, elevated cholesterol intake, high blood pressure, related cancers, and other health effects. Despite the public outcry on the issue, McDonalds Corporation has done nothing to counter the health aspect. Instead, they have spread the risk of people getting these diseases to more areas as the company is rapidly growing. The company has also introduced new items in their menu, which are high in fat. From the way the corporation is acting, whatever is not legal is okay to carry out despite its effects on its consumersââ¬â¢ health. Wish War Veterans a Happy Veterans Day
The eleventh day of November is a special day. In the United States, the day is called Veterans Day. In some other parts of the world, it is called Remembrance Day, a day to honor military folk, who served during war. This day draws the nations attention to the sacrifices made by its war heroes. Americans express their collective pride for the armed forces. Mark TwainIn the beginning of a change, the patriot is a scarce man, and brave, and hated and scorned. When his cause succeeds, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a patriot.Arthur Koestler The most persistent sound, which reverberates through mens history is the beating of war drums.Dan LipinskiOn this Veterans Day, let us remember the service of our veterans, and let us renew our national promise to fulfill our sacred obligations to our veterans and their families who have sacrificed so much so that we can live free.John DoolittleAmericas veterans have served their country with the belief that democracy and freedom are ideals to be upheld around the world. Veterans Day Background On November 11, 1918, the First World War officially ended. A year later, American President Woodrow Wilson formerly instituted Armistice Day to honor the brave hearts, who were martyred during the war. However, Second World War veteran Raymond Weeks from Birmingham, Alabama had a different vision. In 1945, Weeks announced that 11 November should honor all war veterans. Hence two years later, the first Veterans Day was observed, paying tribute to all those who served the military during war. Veterans Day is now a federal holiday across America. Veterans Day Celebrations in America On this day, military veterans are awarded medals and honors for their selfless hard work. At 11 a.m., the ceremony begins with the official wreath-laying at the Tomb of the Unknowns, followed by a colorful parade by various veterans service organizations, and speeches made by dignitaries. Elsewhere, states conduct their own parades, honoring brave military personnel, who served during wartime and peacetime. Gary HartI think there is one higher office than president and I would call that patriot.Douglas MacArthurIn my dreams I hear again the crash of guns, the rattle of musketry, the strange, mournful mutter of the battlefield.Michel de MontaigneValor is stability, not of legs and arms, but of courage and the soul.Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit The more we sweat in peace the less we bleed in war. Celebrating Courage Under Fire Writer George Orwell made a moving comment on civilians attitude to the military when he said, People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf. Author Mark Twain also brought out the tragedy of being in a war. Twain wrote, Anyone who has ever looked into the glazed eyes of a soldier dying on the battlefield will think hard before starting a war.Remember these famous Veterans Day quotes when you offer your opinion during a conversation on war, peace, and the military. War is certainly not a game for the men and women who have to show courage under fire. Remember Your War Heroes If you love poetry, spare a moment to read Tommy, a classic poem by Rudyard Kipling. The poem talks about the publics hypocritical attitude to the common soldier, typified by Tommy Atkins. Towards the end of the poem, Kipling writes, Its Tommy this, and Tommy that,And chuck him out the brute,But its Savior of his Country,When the guns begin to shoot. Kipling may have been describing military life in Britain, but the poem has universal significance. Around the world, we fail to give our military heroes their due. As you read some Veterans Day quotations from poems, you will gain insight into the lives and motivations of those serving in the military. Byron PulsiferTo be free and to have a choice and a voice means that veterans have been quieted through death.Henry Ward BeecherAre they dead that yet speak louder than we can speak, and a more universal language? Are they dead that yet act? Are they dead that yet move upon society and inspire the people with nobler motives and more heroic patriotism?Jeff MillerThe willingness of Americaââ¬â¢s veterans to sacrifice for our country has earned them our lasting gratitude.

ââ¬ÅWrite About the Ways Auden Tells the Story in the Poetic Piece ââ¬ËMiss Geeââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬Â Free Essays
ââ¬Å"Write about the ways Auden tells the story in the poetic piece ââ¬ËMiss Geeââ¬â¢? â⬠Through the ballad of ââ¬ËMiss Geeââ¬â¢ Auden tells the story of the character Miss Edith Gee this is achieved in a variety of ways. The poetic piece is a ballad intended to be read to the tune of ââ¬ËSt Jamesââ¬â¢ Infirmaryââ¬â¢. Auden has created a regular pattern of quatrains as well as a regular rhythm which progresses the general flow of the poem and creates the atmosphere of a story for the reader. We will write a custom essay sample on ââ¬Å"Write About the Ways Auden Tells the Story in the Poetic Piece ââ¬ËMiss Geeââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ or any similar topic only for you Order Now The initial exposition is extremely sympathetic towards Miss Gee. ââ¬Å"Now let me tell you a little story about Miss Edith Geeâ⬠is a cruel way to open the narrative as Auden instantly belittles her character and makes her seem insignificant, whereas she is actually the main, if not only character we meet in detail. This technique is effectives the reader then feels that she is insignificant, and although it is she who lends her name to the poem, is an outcast and a quiet individual. She is continually referred to as small, further lowering the impressions of the character to the reader. Auden establishes the setting of the poem in the introductory stanza, as would be done in a story ââ¬Å"She lived in Clevedon Terrace/ At Number 83â⬠. This is an ordinary address and place for the poem to be set it, this in turn establishes the normality and average attributes of Miss Gee showing her character as one of no complexity. The further repetition of ââ¬ËClevedon Terraceââ¬â¢ in the poem is a constant reminder from Auden to the reader to always bring them back to the fact that the character Miss Gee is intended to be average and ordinary just like any other individual. Miss Geeââ¬â¢s appearance is made apparent by Auden in the third stanza ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢d a velvet hat with trimmings,/And a dark grey serge costume;â⬠ââ¬Å"purpleâ⬠¦ greenâ⬠this description of Miss Geeââ¬â¢s clothing is very ironic as lots of colours are present but on a colourless character. Auden may have intended this imagery to be seen as symbolism of Miss Geeââ¬â¢s persona how she tries to mask her simplicity in colours but is always unable to mask her unfeminine personality and the fact that she is insecure in her own skin. The is no connection between Auden and herself and the poem has a very impersonal tone to it Auden is very mocking of Miss Gee when describing her clothing as a ââ¬Å"costumeâ⬠which creates the impression that she almost trying to dress up as somebody else and is seen to some as somewhat of a joke. Auden uses a regular pattern of rhyme throughout the poetic piece How to cite ââ¬Å"Write About the Ways Auden Tells the Story in the Poetic Piece ââ¬ËMiss Geeââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ , Papers

Mama O free essay sample
ââ¬Å"The first time I saw her, she was walkinââ¬â¢ down the hall, singinââ¬â¢ and carryinââ¬â¢ a bedpan full of pee. I knew then she was the girl I wanted to marry, and so I did.â⬠Dr. Bill always said this of Mama O, my Mississippi grandmother. Back then, she was working as a nurse in Birmingham, Alabama. At eighty-nine, she is still a nurse, but instead of using needles and scalpels as her tools, Mama O nurses people with her Southern home-style cooking, or what she likes to call ââ¬Å"comfort food.â⬠Her clear blue eyes, white curls, and permanently etched smile greet anyone who happens to pass through the door. Mama O welcomes everyone, whether a garbage collector or federal judge, into her home and her heart. One time, two Mormons passed through Forest, Mississippi to do missionary work. Everyone in town was wary of their presence. Their silent manners and solemn clothing struck the conservative Southerners as strange to say the least. We will write a custom essay sample on Mama O or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page One of them became ill, and Mama O took both into her home without hesitation. When the neighbors questioned her, she simply replied, ââ¬Å"I didnââ¬â¢t see two Mormons. I saw two boys who needed their mama.â⬠Mama O taught me that it does not matter where people come from or what they believe in; everyone deserves kindness and loving all the same. Although Mama O rarely leaves her house, the world finds its way to her. A patron of literature, she reads three newspapers, magazines, and books daily. Her backyard is an animal shelter: cats and dogs are served cornbread and fried chicken. Pictures checker her walls, showing her friends of all ages across the world from Australia to England. Mama O considers everyone her own. She brings water to the mailman and bakes pies for the repairman. When a cross-country bicyclist sought refuge in Forest, people directed him to Mama Oââ¬â¢s house; I heard he made it to Washington, D.C. with ten more pounds on his bones. Mama O is the epitome of Southern hospitality; no one leaves without feeling like a stuffed turkey. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s just what I do,ââ¬â¢ she says. Making others happy is as natural to her as cooking. Living through the Great Depression and World War II, Mama O bore witness to loss and poverty. She embraces hardships with humility and appreciation. I marvel at her generous spirit and willingness to serve others. I tell myself that like Mama O, I will ââ¬Å"wake up every morning expecting something good to happen.â⬠At the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science, my mind and textbooks are my tools, and I approach every challenge with a positive mindset. I take advantage of the opportunities I am given, and I do not hesitate to help out someone in need. I am proud to claim my Mississippi grandmother who taught me to go through life with a smile and a song on my face, even if I ever find myself ââ¬Å"carrying a bedpan full of pee.ââ¬

Does America need a federal hate-crime law? According to the United States Department of Justice, ââ¬Å"Hate crime is the violence of intolerance and bigotry, intended to hurt and intimidate someone because of their race, ethnicity, national origin, religious, sexual orientation, or disability.â⬠(5) Many think hate crimes are acts that are committed today, but these crimes held an important part in world history. The Nazisââ¬â¢ killing of the Jews was a hate crime. The Holocaust was manifested by hate and that hate was carried out by killing those that were hated. There are many hate crimes that arenââ¬â¢t even noticed. The public hears the stories that result in death or severe assault. One such story is the Matthew Shepard case. Here was a young man that was having problems with his sexual orientation. He knew that he was gay, and only wanted to live his life without fear. He went out one evening and was friendly to a couple of men at a bar. Matt was unaware that these men were homophobic. The men took him to a place, tied him to a fence and beat him to death. The media publications on the Matthew Shepard case were unbelievable. Then there was the case of Arthur Carl Warren Jr., a homosexual man from West Virginia. What happened to him was just has horrendous as Shepardââ¬â¢s. He was beaten and kicked to death by two 17-year old boys. He was then laid out on the ground and run over by a car many times. But why then wasnââ¬â¢t this case as important as Shepardââ¬â¢s? Could it be that the perpetrators were minors, or is it a cover-up by local law enforcement officers, or was it the law itself? West Virginia does have hate crime laws, but this stateââ¬â¢s law does not have a law for sexual orientation as documented by the Anti-Defamation League. In this post, weââ¬â¢re going to help you prepare for your exams by giving you a list list of the best Spanish love quotes with English translation. For each quote, weââ¬â¢ll: Give you the love quote in Spanish Provide the English translation Discuss the meaning of the quote Ready? Letââ¬â¢s get started! Spanish Love Quote #1: A Quote About Eternity Prefiero un minuto contigo a una eternidad sin ti. This sentence literally translates to, ââ¬Å"I prefer a minute with you than an eternity without you.â⬠In other words, youââ¬â¢d rather know (and love!) a person for a short amount of time than live a full life having never known them at all. Itââ¬â¢s incredibly romantic...which is why we chose it to kick off our list! This line also teaches you how to set up a comparison in Spanish. You can use the basic form of this sentence to show how one thing is better than the other, which is going to be an important skill for the written portion of your Spanish exams. Memorizing a quote like this one is like having a little grammar shortcut that you can whip out at any time. Spanish Love Quote #2: A Quote About Fighting Rià ±en a menudo los amantes, por el gusto de hacer las paces. Literally, this quotation translates to, ââ¬Å"Lovers quarrel often for the pleasure of making peace.â⬠However, thereââ¬â¢s a more figurative way to think of this line, too. At its core, this quote is about passion. In passionate relationships, thereââ¬â¢s often a thin line between arguing and attraction. Thatââ¬â¢s why itââ¬â¢s so common to see this happen in romantic movies. One of our favorite scenes is this one from The Notebook: iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/EemLsTG5fX8" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen/iframe This scene shows us that the quote might be right: making up is the best part of a loverââ¬â¢s quarrel! Spanish Love Quote #3: A Quote About Changing Someone Amar a alguien para hacerlo distinto significa asesinarle. The word-for-word translation of this quote is a little gruesome. Literally, it means, ââ¬Å"Loving someone to make them different means murdering them.â⬠But more accurately, this quote is saying that loving someone to try and change who they are is a recipe for disaster. Thatââ¬â¢s because youââ¬â¢re actually not in love with the person your significant other is...youââ¬â¢re in love with this ideal person you wish they could become! In the end, this quote warns us that trying to change the person you love- rather than loving them for who they are- results in unhappiness for everyone. Spanish Love Quote #4: A Quote About Fear El mayor obstculo para el amor es el temor secreto de no ser dignos de ser amados. This line translates to, ââ¬Å"The greatest obstacle to love is the hidden fear of not being worthy of being loved.â⬠For many people, love can be difficult...but it can sometimes be compounded by how we feel about ourselves. In fact, research suggests that good self-esteem is important to having healthy relationships. In this case, this quote reminds us that itââ¬â¢s just as important to love ourselves as it is to love someone else. Spanish Love Quote #5: A Quote About Young Love Amor de nià ±o, agua en cestillo. Okay, this is one of those quotes where you just have to remember the figurative meaning. Literally, this quote translates to, ââ¬Å"Love of a child, water in basket.â⬠Which, to be fair, doesnââ¬â¢t make much sense at all! In actuality, this quote is saying that young love is fickle. Yeah, we know: itââ¬â¢s one of those things you just have to memorize to understand. (English is full of these idioms that make no sense, like ââ¬Å"cool as a cucumberâ⬠for being good under pressure.) But knowing idiomatic phrases like this one- and using them correctly!- can be pretty impressive when youââ¬â¢re writing your exam essays. Spanish Love Quote #6: A Quote About Heartbreak Hay mucho ms donde elegir. What do you do when you- or a friend- goes through a really bad break-up? You know, the type where you were head-over-heels in love, but for some reason, the other person didnââ¬â¢t feel the same? Thatââ¬â¢s where this quote can come in handy. It translates to, ââ¬Å"Thereââ¬â¢s a lot more out there to choose from.â⬠But itââ¬â¢s closer in meaning to the English saying, ââ¬Å"there are plenty of fish in the sea.â⬠Heartbreak is painful, and sometimes it feels like you lost ââ¬Å"the oneâ⬠for you. But this quote is a good reminder that the world is a big place! While breakups are tough, theyââ¬â¢re also temporary. If youââ¬â¢re brave enough- and follow the advice from Quote #4 above!- you can find love again. Spanish Love Quote #7: A Quote About Partnership Amar no es mirarse el uno al otro, es mirar juntos en la misma direccià ³n. This sentence has the same literal and figurative meaning. It translates to, ââ¬Å"Love itââ¬â¢s not to look at each other, itââ¬â¢s to look together towards the same direction.â⬠Is loving someone enough for a long, happy relationship? According to this quote, there might be more to it than just affection. And actually, science seems to support this. This article from Psychology Today explains that common reasons for relationships failing are having different expectations or priorities in life than your partner. This quote teaches us that love about more than just thinking the other person is attractive, or even caring deeply about your partner. Long-lasting, loving relationships involve working with your partner to determine where your lives are going, so you can ensure youââ¬â¢re both heading in the same direction. Spanish Love Quote #8: A Quote About Motivation El amor todo lo puede. This sentence translates to, ââ¬Å"Love can do everything.â⬠In other words, love is a powerful motivator. This is a favorite topic of feel-good news stories like this one about a father who runs triathlons with his disabled son, or this story about this man who donated his kidney to his best friend. These are just a few examples of how love can motivate us to do things for other people that we never thought possible. And while that might seem anecdotal at first, science actually supports this idea. Whether itââ¬â¢s love for a partner, a family member, a friend, or even a pet, love can drive us to accomplish amazing things! Spanish Love Quote #9: A Quote About Pain Donde hay amor, hay dolor. But as we all know, love can also be painful, too. Thatââ¬â¢s why weââ¬â¢ve included this quote in our list, which translates to ââ¬Å"Where thereââ¬â¢s love, thereââ¬â¢s pain.â⬠Oftentimes, we immediately think of a bad break-up or a divorce as an example of love causing pain. But there are different types of love, too! For example, letââ¬â¢s say you love your school, but your parents get new jobs and you have to move to a new city. Youââ¬â¢d probably be pretty upset about it, right? That pain is a result of the love you feel for your teachers and friends. And youââ¬â¢re not alone in feeling a love/pain connection: scientists now believe that love and pain are neurologically interconnected! Given all of that, it's tempting to think of this quote as warning us against love, but thatââ¬â¢s not the case. Rather, this saying is a reminder that pain is the price of love, but it doesnââ¬â¢t mean that loving isnââ¬â¢t worth it in the end. Spanish Love Quote #10: A Quote About Dislike No hay amor perdido entre nosotros. This quote, which translates to ââ¬Å"there is no love lost between us,â⬠comes from the famous Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes. Cervantes is perhaps the most famous Spanish author of all time, and heââ¬â¢s most well known for writing Don Quixote. Before he became a writer, Cervantes served in the Spanish military and took part in naval battles as part of the Spanish navy marines. That meant he saw the animosity between people firsthand, so he definitely knew what he was talking about when he wrote this line. To say that thereââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"no love lostâ⬠between you and someone else is a polite way to say that you donââ¬â¢t like another person or thing. In fact, it means that you donââ¬â¢t like them at all! (For example, as far as weââ¬â¢re concerned, thereââ¬â¢s no love lost between us and Croc shoes, dill pickles, and people who litter). This is just another example of the ways that love and other emotions can be tied together. Spanish Love Quote #: When You Want to Be Honest (but Funny) El amor entra por la cocina. Our last Spanish love quote is another one that has a literal and a figurative translation. Literally, this sentence means, ââ¬Å"Love enters through the kitchen.â⬠But what itââ¬â¢s really saying is that the quickest way to a personââ¬â¢s heart is through their stomach. And if thatââ¬â¢s not true, we donââ¬â¢t know what is! The 20 Words and Phrases You Need to Know to Write Your Own Romantic Spanish Quotes Like we mentioned before, the quotes above can help you start to understand Spanish a little better. The Impact of the Euro Since its Launch Dissertation
The Impact of the Euro Since its Launch - Dissertation Example The currency had also to revive itself from the initial downturn it suffered and later to sustain the growth achieved by it as an international currency. This paper presents the major advantages and disadvantages of the currency as a single currency and the impact it created on the various economic fronts since its inception. The major purpose of introduction of Euro was to take on the challenges of competition posed by the growing attitude of globalization. The other object envisaged by the European Union through the introduction of Euro was to overcome the barriers imposed by the diversities posed by the different economies. These diversities are caused by the conflicting monetary and fiscal policies of the various governments and the multifarious tariffs and restrictions placed on trade and investment. Before the introduction of Euro the euro-zone currencies were greatly influenced by the rise or fall in the rate of US dollar. The introduction and existence of euro has led to the positive impact of alleviating the financial crisis faced by the euro-zone countries since 1998. Further positive effects of the common European currency in the form of price stability, cheaper and better banking facilities, increase in the competitiveness of the industrial enterprises and welfare of the consumers in general have resulted during the last 8 years of the existence. Most generally the vastness of the European internal market with a single currency made Europe a potential competitor to the market of the US.
